We’re hiring for 2 Summer Student Positions.

Cycle Hamilton is pleased to announce its summer student positions! These positions are only open to post-secondary students (age 18-30) who were full-time students in the past year and will be full-time students again in the coming year. Positions have been updated since initial posting based on Canada Summer Jobs funding received

 

Cycle Hamilton is a cycling advocacy organization dedicated to being an information hub for cyclists, serving as a unified voice for cyclists, and enforcing accountability at City Hall on cycling issues. We believe in the bicycle as a sustainable, affordable, healthy mode of transportation that can transform our city for the better. We are supported by both individual and business members.

 

  1. Education & Advocacy Coordinator

 

Position Dates

May 15, 2017 – June 30, 2017 (7 weeks)

 

Hours

30 hours/week

 

Rate of Pay

$11.65/hour

 

Our ideal Education & Advocacy Coordinator will be dynamic and well-informed, with a keen interest in making our city a better, safer place for all levels of cyclists. You’ll help us in our push for better cycling infrastructure as well as working to make sure that current, new, and potential cyclists have the tools they need to feel safe on our roads. You’ll help make sure that Cycle Hamilton is well-known as a place for people to find out more about cycling in Hamilton, and that we live up to that reputation. You’ll be working on some shared projects with our Membership & Communications Coordinator, but must be comfortable working independently as supervision will be consistent but mostly remote.

 

Job Responsibilities

-Creating and distributing educational materials about benefits of cycling as well as Cycle Hamilton’s mission

-Planning educational workshops and social outreach events

-Conducting research on current state of cycling infrastructure, plans for expansion, and citizens’ priorities

-Promoting and operating campaigns for safe cycling infrastructure (such as our #CycleSafeSydenham campaign), which can include canvassing, online outreach, or meetings with relevant stakeholders

-Researching and applying for funding sources

-Representing Cycle Hamilton at relevant events such as street festivals, neighbourhood meetings, and other tabling opportunities

 

What we’re looking for:

-Educational background or relevant experience in one or more of the following: environment, public health, political science, geography/urban planning, communications

-Experience with community outreach, public education, political engagement, and social justice

-Familiarity with Hamilton’s neighbourhoods and cycling infrastructure

-Interest in cycling and in promoting safe cycling infrastructure

-Comfort with public speaking and engaging with community members

 

Training and Supervision

The student will be trained on the organization’s mission, vision, values, and identity as well as our context, history, and operating procedures. If desired, the student will be supplied with an office space. The student will report to Cycle Hamilton’s Project Manager, Chair, and Vice-chair. The student will have detailed task plans and weekly meetings with the chair and vicechair of Cycle Hamilton and supervisors will be available via phone/email if questions arise between meetings. Supervision will be mostly remote so the applicant must be comfortable with working independently.

The supervisors will act as mentors for the student. For a mentoring plan, at the beginning of the employment period the student and supervisor will work together to finalize the task plan and project completion schedule for the summer with a strong focus on ensuring that skills the student is interested in cultivating (strong writing, decision making, research, etc) are included in as many tasks and projects as possible. Weekly meetings will include a review of skills progression and a revision of projects to correct deficiencies if needed.

 

  1. Membership & Communications Coordinator

Our ideal Memberships & Communications Coordinator will be organized and creative with strong writing skills and the ability to convey our value and our mission to potential new partners. You’ll reach out to our existing members to keep them up to date on what we’ve been doing as well as identifying and reaching out to potential new members, both individuals and businesses. You’ll also be helping us build partnerships with other government and community groups with similar missions. You’ll be working on some shared projects with our Education & Advocacy Coordinator, but must be comfortable working independently as supervision will be consistent but mostly remote.

 

Job Responsibilities

-creating and managing membership communications, e.g. social media postings, a monthly newsletter, and updating our blog/website

-Running new member outreach, including reaching out to potential partners among citizen groups, government and businesses.

-Researching/applying for funding sources

-Representing Cycle Hamilton at relevant events such as street festivals, neighbourhood meetings, and other tabling opportunities

 

What we’re looking for:

-Educational background or related experience in one or more of the following: environment, public health, marketing, communications, computer science (especially around website creation and design).

-Graphic design skills or website building skills

-Experience with community outreach, marketing, recruiting, or sales would all be assets

-Social media savvy and engaging writing skills

-Familiarity with Hamilton’s neighbourhoods and cycling infrastructure

-Interest in cycling and in promoting safe cycling infrastructure

-Comfort with public speaking and engaging with community members
